Why Are Color Ink Cartridges More Expensive Than Black?
If you've shopped for ink cartridges before, you've probably noticed that color ink and toner is more expensive than the black. Have you ever wondered why that is? There are many reasons why this is so. Color printing requires the use of the three process colors: cyan, magenta, and yellow. In order to get these colors, there are two different kinds of color cartridges. The first option, depending on what your printer calls for, is to buy each color individually. This would mean that your printer requires four ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow) and is more common in color laser printers. The second and more common option is to buy a tri-color cartridge which contains all three colors in one cartridge. Most people may think that color ink is more expensive because there are three different colors of ink in the cartridge, compared to the one color in the black cartridges. While this is true to an extent, black cartridges actually contain more ink than all three colors in the color cartridge combined. This is due to the fact that the color and ink cartridges are the same size, but the color cartridge is split into three separate ink reservoirs; one for each color.
The truth is, the design and manufacture of tri-color cartridges are more complex, and ultimately, they cost more to produce. Another reason why black ink is the cheaper of the two is because it is in such high demand, which drives down the price. This high demand occurs because of the large number of printers that only print black and white, along with the fact that even in color printers, black ink is the most often used. While tri-color cartridges are most common, many prefer the printers which have separate cartridges for each color. While these cartridges are still more expensive than the black ink/toner, they hold more ink and do not have to be replaced or refilled as frequently. Unfortunately, with tri-color cartridges, when one of the three colors runs out, the entire cartridge must be changed. While black ink and toner is less expensive than color, the difference is not usually more than a few dollars. The truth is that all printer ink and toner is expensive, no matter what color you are buying. There are plenty of money saving and ink preservation tips that can significantly reduce your yearly printing costs, and which are easily implemented.
